The UK needs a security check and vetting system in place to protect against threats from hostile intelligence services and terrorist and other pressure groups. Vetting tries to ensure that anyone who goes through the process can be trusted on a need to know basis with sensitive government information or property.
There are three main types of national security checks and clearances carried out by the Defence Vetting Agency. These are: CTC (Counter Terrorist Check), SC (Security Check) and DV (Developed Vetting). CTC, SC and DV are all formal security clearances obtained through the national security vetting (NSV) process. Please see Security Clearance Levels for more information.
